Draw Everyday For A Year (October 2019) Days 1 to 26 : FISHY DRAWINGS

You can find out more about what this Art Challenge is, in the Draw Everyday For A Year Introduction Blog Post :)

A lil BIT ABOUT THESE FISHYS

I never planned to start drawing Fishys, it just sort of happened. Bob Ross calls these sort of things Happy Little Accidents, and I love em :) The day one drawing, on October 6th 2019, was only a Fishy because I’ve always found Fishys to be Simple Sexy Shapes :)

Before I knew it however, the Fishys took over and every drawing for the 26 days of October 2019 became a lil Fishy. This made the art challenge a lot more simple, as instead of having to decide what to draw each day, all I had to do was think of a random word than come up with an idea for a Fishy.

Fishys allowed me to Keep it Simple Stupid”, as Will Terry would say :)

WHAT I ENJOYED?

The main tings I enjoyed about the first 26 days of this Art Challenge, were seeing Rebecca Berret (the Artist who started this Draw Everyday For A Year Art Challenge and invited me to play along) post her work on Instagram each morning. She did this really cool thing too, where some of her drawings would tell a story over multiple days; It was Super Inspiring to know we were both in this thing together.

Something funny with these Fishys was the day 4 Sleeping Fishy, which my Neice Jasmine said looked like he was Playing with his Fishy Willy under those fishy sheets lol I can’t look at this drawing without this image popping, pardon the pun, in my head now … thanks Jas :)

Realising I can come up with Ideas was, like the fishys willy, a big one too lol My mind had always said I can’t, so I Never Tried, but this Art Challenge put me out of my comfort zone and forced me to Try and made me realise I Could. The Mind had been Lying and Sabotaging me all those years *grr*

Other fun tings were: drawing Big Fishy Shapes, Blending Coloured Pencils to create the effect of fire, and trying to Tell a Story in a Single Image, again, something I’d not really tried before due to fear.

BIGGEST STRUGGLES?

My current Lack of Skills. There were too many times when I just couldn’t draw what was in my head, due to various artistic limitations. Like how I couldn’t draw the Perspective of the chair being squashed by the Fat fishy on day 13, or the pose of the lap dancing fishy on day 6.

I also struggled with how you can’t Erase Ink very well, but the cool thing is, this turned into a positive in later months, as it forced me to start pencil sketching/practicing more before committing to the final ink drawing.

BEST LEARNING?

Limits are Freeing. That’s the main thing I learnt, because by limiting the variables and only drawing Fishys, it meant I didn’t have to think too much. Come up with a word, than see what the pencil wanted to do :) I loved it!

MY FAVOURITE FISHY

Day 15, THE MEDITATING FISHY is my favourite. I like how happy he is, and how the lil fishys look like they’re under the water due to the wiggly lines.

MY POOPIEST FISHY

Day 6, THE LAP DANCING FISHY. What a load of poop lol I don’t like the colours, the pose, the lips. It’s because I didn’t do enough thumbnailing/sketching before jumping into the inking, but the good thing is, I Still Showed Up and did a drawing that day :)
