This was my first Dog Pencil Drawing and, gulp, my first proper Commission. Normally when I get asked to do a Commission I say No, I think it’s due to Fear, but when Nikki emailed asking if I would do a Drawing of her lil doggy Saffi, something inside of me said Yes.
I’m so glad it did, because I really enjoyed drawing Saffi. As is always the case when you ‘finish’ a drawing, there’s always bits you wish you could do better, but I’ve learnt that part of the drawing process is letting go; being able to say, “Yes, It’s Good Enough.”
This Pencil Drawing of Saffi is now in it’s new home, and Nikki messaged me to say she liked it. Phew. I was terrified she wouldn’t. I always feel like that when I give someone a drawing. Wonder if everyone does? I’ve Gotten So Much Confidence From This Drawing though, so I thank both Nikki and Saffi for helping me Face some of my Fears.
In terms of the actual Drawing, this one had a few challenges. I made a lil video just before I sent it off, which I will upload soon, but Saffi Became Like A Puzzle. She had some sections which were Dark on Light, while at the same time being collectively in front of something Darker.
You had to work out, how do I make that Darker without making this other bit lighter? Like a Puzzle out of Portal, you sort of had to break it down into Layers, almost seeing everything as separate bits; I found this really Satisfying.
I’m so glad Nikki liked it, that’s really all that matters, hopefully Saffi likes it too :)

“Who are you?
Are you in touch with all of your darkest fantasies?
Have you created a life for yourself where you can experience them?
I have. I am fucking crazy.
But I am free.” – Lana Del Rey
“I really think it’s important and is why Rocky Horror has stood the test of time. It’s been around for 43 years. It’s liberating: the audience can come along, release themselves and dress up.” – Diana Vickers
“As an aquatic animal, the otter is a symbol of life. Why? Because the prime symbolic meaning of water deals with the divine feminine, which is a major life-giving energy. Water (and otters) are symbolic of creativity, fluidity and transitions.”
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
